about
By playing music, I try to explore and express my inner self, and invite my audiences to do the same. I'd love it if my approach could make a difference to the way music is thought about. But if it's just a moment of pleasure for the ears and the emotions, that's fine too.
I like to play, create, take photos, meet people, research, listen, perform, share, to imagine, connect...
I live with two cats that I deeply love.
I also have a proper bio that you can download in French or in English
Or you can just read it here :
Olivier Duverger Houpert is a multi-faceted musician. He trained in classical and contemporary saxophone - a repertoire he still loves and practices today - with Philippe Geiss and Lars Mlekusch (2010-2014) in Strasbourg and Vienna. He then turned to the field of free improvisation and its many ramifications. This work led him to take up a doctorate in Musical Interpretation and Creation at the Collège Glarean in Strasbourg. His research focuses on the role of the interpreter-improviser in the performance of comprovisation works, which combine elements of composition and improvisation.
His powerful and poetic improvisations and interpretations reflect an ongoing reflection on the interstices between styles and categories, on areas of complexity and multiple entanglements. His modal bruitism or modal noise is an exploration of psychic processes such as memory - individual or collective - the arborescence of thoughts, recontextualisation and evocation.
Olivier is the founder of the improvisation ensembles Al Zouhir/Duverger and Grch. As a member of the RE/SONO saxophone quartet, which performs regularly in France and abroad, he won the Illzach (France) and Salieri-Zinetti (Verona, Italy) International Chamber Music Competitions in 2017. He also performs with Ensemble L'Imaginaire in the project Cavacar, with Sérgio Rodrigo.
Olivier performed as a soloist in 2016 with the Ukho ensemble in Ukraine, and with his ensembles or as a soloist in Berlin, Riga, Argentina and Spain, at the NEW/NOW, Musica, SaxOpen and Météo festivals and at the World Saxophone Congress in Zagreb.
He regularly gives masterclasses and workshops in performance (University of Milan, Buenos Aires, Almeria Conservatoire, etc.) and improvisation (Riga Academy of Music, Berlin Universität der Kunst, Cholet CRD).
